Hi all, I'm new here and to gardening, so forgive me if this is a silly question. Part of my yard has Lily of the Valley and last year I noticed that grass was growing admist it, actually growing taller than it some cases, since I couldn't mow it. I had forgotten all about it until I just noticed the Lily shoots coming up, among the grass patches. What's the best way to go about getting rid of the grass without harming the Lily? I've been pulling it up where I can, but I need hoe/rake to dig up some of it and I don't want to disturb the roots of the Lily. Thanks, Jersey |

don't worry...lily-of-the-valley is pretty darn tough and can be invasive. if the grass hadn't moved in on it, it may have taken over the lawn eventually. i'd tear out all the grass and not be too concerned with losing a few lilies. they'll replace themselves soon. you might want to put down a barrier of some kind between lawn and lilies so it doesn't happen again. |

Thanks, Billie. That's just what I did. I did feel a little guilty because I had to step on some of the new lily to get to the grass to yank it up. Last year, it the lily didn't seem to do as well as the year before. Is there something I should be doing to help it along or are some years better than others? |
