23 March 2007 Zone 5. The soil is too wet to work. I had some straw used as mulch to winter protect my Canna Lilies, so I decided to shred it and place on the garden bed to increase the fibre content. It will be rototilled into the soil when the moisture content is appropiate. I found that the straw almost completely disappears come planting time about the 24 of May or earlier.

So exactly what does the straw do? Why would you want to increase the fiber content of a garden bed?

The main reaon is getting moisture down to the plant roots. The mantra is when watering that you shouldn't have puddles form. All my life the soil was such that puddling was aways apparent, due to slow drainage into the bed. These straw fibers allow moisture to get where needed, also allows for some aeration to the roots. Sometime I add ground up partially composted wood chips, but the straw was available so I used it.
