22 June 2006 Zone 5. The flowering plants were bought as seedlings, but the ones in the center area are from last years crop. They self-seed and survive the winter. We usually get the seedlings to have blooms earlier. The plants are speading and will eventually cover the bed.

Four pictures of Portulaca Bed Update
27 June 2006. The plants are spreading. The under-exposed picture sort of highlights the colours. It is always a pleasure to view the bed.

13 July 2006 Portulaca Bed is now filled in. We had about three inches of rain yesterday. Bright sun today, which portulaca like and they bloomed. This is probably as pretty as it gets. New blooms everyday as long as the sun is bright. The center is a poker plant, perennial for contrast. It didn't bloom this year, but I expect it will be attracfive in 2007.

Portulaca doesn't like to be wet for long periods. We started to get rain too often later in the season, and the bed slowly died away. Next year I will cover trhe bed during heavy rain to lengthen the blooming time.

I love portuluca. It is the one plant that keeps going through our short lil dry spell. I plan on using it around my sunny patio this year.

I really like portuluca also. I have some started in my seed starting station. They are coming along nicely. I like the way you have them in a circular bed.
