Unless the bulbs come with a shutter button, I'm clueless...... So I just transplanted a bunch of Amaryllis bulbs from the backyard where the puppy seems to think they are tasty....to the front where they will show a bit better. Our front yard needs all the help it can get. When I planted them, I had already put a sheet of weedblock down and then cut holes for the bulbs. Those bulbs are doing great, they're erupting like crazy now. My question is will the weedblock sheet prevent them from spreading? They had spread all over in the back over the years, from a half-dozen bulbs to several dozen and had filled in a significant area. I was hoping they would do the same in the front, but the weed block sheet makes me think they won't. Should I remove the weed block sheet or will new ones push thru? thanx in advance! (pics later!) |

Ken, i think you better remove the weedblock if you want them to spread. i'm not sure any bulb can push up thru weedblocker. |

You can remove it now or wait and have to cut it back when they do multiply. I had some around my hostas and learned the hard way. I have to cut some of the fabric back every year. BUt I already had rock on top of it before I learned what was going on so it would be a big job to completely remove it now. They will still try to come up but will be hindered by the fabric so it will have to be cleared for expansion sooner or later. It would probably be easier to do it now. Boy, what a problem. Amarylis multiplying like weeds. I pay $6.00 per bulb here if I can get them on sale. You wouldn't have any extras you'd want to trade for something would you? |

ok, you've confirmed my suspicions, I'll remove the weed block. All it has is fresh mulch on top now, so it should be fairly easy. If I see that we need to thin them, Brenda, I'll let you know. I had to cull some over the years as the small area they were in was almost choking. We gave some to my son (Dallas) and inlaws (San Antonio). Both report successful transplants! I've spread the remaining about 2-3 dozen bulbs (from quarter size to over grapefruit size) over a bed about 2' x 10', so hopefully they will have room to spread. This is what one of them looked like in years past. http://www.gardenpics.com/photos/showphoto.php? photo=2237&cat=500&ppuser=7310 thanx kenw |

Gorgeous. I have ONE that I got for sale at Wal-mart for $3.50 and was scared it was no good. It was the only one they had left and it was dated for sale in 2006 but I held my breath. I put it in dirt about three weeks ago and I have TWO bloom staks with buds on them. They are supposed to be white with red trim. I am so excited I can't wait. |

Amaryllis are very hardy. I have treated them very badly in the past and when I do get them in the ground they will bloom. I have two on my screened porch right now that have two leaves left from when they bloomed at Christmas. Need to get them in the ground soon. |
