I love to use the Jiffy mini greenhouses for starting seeds in Peat Pellets, but I saw this the other day and am thinking about getting a couple (I have a couple tax dollars I get to play with )...Has anyone used one? Is it any better than using the non heated ones and using a regular heating pad? http://www.hardwareandtools.com/invt/6036107[/UR L]

I bought something like the one you are looking at but it had the fill your own cells in it. I used it to propigate some stem cuttings from some of my houseplants. It worked really well for them. I had roots growing within 2 weeks on most plants. The only thing is I bought a cheap one and it broke before I could get to starting seeds. I would think that It would work better,or as well as a heating pad.

RK, i use a regular heating mat. the only time i keep it on is until the seeds germinate. it does produce faster germination. after that, i find the mat is too warm and causes mold and other problems. seems to me i paid about the same price for just the mat. one feature i love is the metal grid above the heating mat. it keeps direct heat off the bottom of the greenhouse and allows for circulation.

Yeah, that was partly why I was looking at it, I have banana corms right now that I am trying to start and they take a YEAR to germinate...mostly...and they need it warm and I was thinking about transferring them to one of those, but maybe I will just buy another heating pad, haha. It was mostly because we don't have but one, and well...not going to go a YEAR without it being used on us!

i almost forgot. i used the growing mat to heat soil for caladium corms/bulbs.(?) it worked great. they need really warm soil to get them started.
