In general, should my garden be watered alot, and kept moist. Or less water and allow the top of the soil dry a bit before watering.

The Or applies in most instances. The equivalent of 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain once a week works well in most soils. if very sandy and excessively drained... then twice a week watering would apply.

You just have to watch the soil and see how dry it gets and then set up a watering schedule. I know that some soils hold water longer and then there is the moisture in the air and how fast it drys. You just have to watch it and see. If you live where it gets to 100 and the wind blows alot and all the soil will be dry as soon as you shut off the hose. This is something we all have to learn about.

What are you growing / planning to grow ?

When to water...that is the 10,000 dollar question ....*LOL
Some weather will cause you to have to water everyday,(depends on "how you water " ; I read an inch of water is 5gallons for (loam) soil, you will need more for sand and less for clay I'm thinking...If I can find /remember which book (have a full library and read several at a time period) I'll post as it reads.

Have you tested your soil for good drainage?
