I have unsuccessfully tried to grow an avocado - I usually poke the pit with toothpicks and let the base sit in water, but nothing ever happens. Any suggestions???
THANKS!

which end are you puting in the water...the point or round base?...it also takes a long time to sprout...make sure the round bottom is down...also Ifind it helps if I soak it in water over night it helps to sprout it a bit faster...also make sure not more of half is underwater...you can also start them in soil ..just only out a bit under half in the soil...
here is a link with great information

I'll echo Vegemm's advice. I grew allot of these when I lived in Atlanta. Ended up giving the plants away since I had to fly home at the end. Some of mine ended up over 3 ft high in about 6 months or less.

My DH has about 6 or seven plants he has been growing for several years now. He justs sticks the pit pointy side up in dirt, covered all the way up bout 1/2-inch over. They always sprout. Good luck. We have yet to get an avocado but time will tell.

Not sure how much you would actually see after one week with the soil method. Even with starting partially submerged in water, it can take more than a week to really see visible results. Hang in there.
