You can use basil to relieve sore gums so that might be a fairly common plant that could be of help:

Ladyhawthorne,

Sorry about your toothache. I'm a Registered Dental Assistant, sorrry you don't like us people but I understand. Tell me a little about your tooth.....is it senistive to hot or cold? Do you have a cavity in this tooth? Do you have a clinic type place that offers free Dental care in your area? Do you know of a Dentist who would take monthly payments? We use Oil of Clove in a mixture to place over the exposed nerves before we place a filling in a tooth. I've heard studies have proven that Motrin is the best pain control for Dental pain.

I have been suffering from a toothache for the past few days and today I finally remembered that people used to chew cloves for toothache. I opted to make chamomile tea which is also supposed to be good for it, and added some ground cloves and a little sugar . It was pretty good tea, numbed my tongue and gums a bit but didn't really help my particular toothache. Aleve is doing a pretty good job though for the short term.
Anyone else have any ideas? I hate dentists, don't have insurance or money, so I am always looking for herbal or natural remedies. I have several books, but nothing on toothaches.
I guess cloves are really a spice, but this seemed the best place to put this.

Lady Hawthorne before you go to bed, heat some salt in a sauce pan and then pour the heated salt into a sock and tie a knot in the sock. Sleep with the sock against your cheek and that will give you some relief.
LH if it is really bad you have to get to a dentist because it will only get worse and you are going to suffer while you put off the inevitable.Teeth don't cure themselves.

Hi LadyH,

When I was little, I remember my mother would have me put a Bayer Asprin on the tooth that hurt and then close my teeth together until it melted. I worked then, and tonight I'm doing the same thing (no moolah or ins. either)!

Ladyhawthorne I have used pure vanilla extract on a toothache before in the past while waiting to get in to see the dentist with great success.
Just swish it back and forth where the ache is for several minutes...I ended up canceling appointment and no problem since then...
It deadened the pain.

I swear by a natural plant called MELALUCA.

Its found in Australia....and good for a lot of aches and pains and scratches and teeth.

Its a natural antibiotic...and makes your mouth feel really clean and fresh...

Try it on your tooth..it may help you.

thanks everyone, I will try a couple of these things. The tooth in question had about half of it break off last year, it's a molar in the very back. Has been no problem til about a week ago. I try to keep everything clean and I tend not to chew on that side because of the broken tooth. The fillings are probably 40 years old, so it doesn't surprise me things are falling apart now. I don't think I've been to a dentist in 30 years. Makes me weak to think about going, but if this does not get better, I may have no choice. Finding one that takes payments may be the hardest part.

Sheesh Lady,
I wish that you lived close to me, I would set you up with my dentist. Although he is far from cheap, he is by far the best dentist that I have ever had. He is quick and thorough and doesn't find unneeded work to do in my mouth. Of course, he has the personality of a mushroom, but I don't care about that. I had the same problem as you last year, where half of my back molar broke off. I called into the office and they got me set up the same day...I was in and out in 15 minutes, just enough time for him to numb me, do his job, and tell me that I should probably have the tooth crowned. He does accept monthly payments too. I can't sing his praises enough. Now too bad we have no medical doctors available for new patients. I have been on the waiting list for that at the town hall for over 4 years now. So I have well taken care of teeth, but the rest of me is neglected!
Good luck, and call around to see if you can find my dentist's brother down there in Houston!
