This is my first year planting bulbs. So I have a few questions. The package said to plant in the fall. I planted in October. The package said they would come up early spring-mid spring. But as I walked the garden on New Years day I noticed there are little green shoots already. Does this mean that these are going to come up in the winter? Do I just put more mulch and leaves over them? I live in Zone 5 and we have had a real mild winter so far, I'm sure we could have snow yet. I went to the garden center where I got them but the young lady working today said she was not sure what to do. I planted various tulips, crocus, and various hyacinths. I'm not sure what to do now. Will they still flower (bloom) in the spring if they freeze now?

Welcome to GG, Linda. don't worry about those shoots. the bulbs will be fine even if they freeze at this point. they'll send up new shoots in the Spring and bloom when they're supposed to.

Lindsy welcome to GG. As Foz said your bulbs should be fine.
Around here it looks like we are going into an early spring, I think we missed winter all together. On the news last night they reported that the Cherry Trees in Central Park NYC were braking blooms and a lot of bulbe are starting to push the stalks up.

Lindy, you will only get into trouble if the flower buds/blooms get exposed and freeze. I know what you mean about the mild winter but I think we are in for a bad January, February and March. I haven't taken the time to go out and check mine but I think I will do that tomorrow. We have had plenty of rain but cold and snow have been rare. If the temps drop down really far you might think about mulching your bulbs but I don't think you will lose them.

Thanks so much for the info. We have had a really mild winter so far for Ohio. I was just so excited to see that they really are growing and at the same time, worried that they will freeze and not bloom. I planted most of them around the trees in the shade garden. I cant wait for spring to see how they look.
