Bought some morning glory seeds and some high-phosphate fertilizer--planning on running the fines up a trellis along my way--the ideal picture in my head being a wall of pure, blue flowers. 2 questions: 1.Even though it is near winter I live in southern CA (Average yearly low temperature is 52 degrees, with 32 degrees being the record). Should I still wait until spring to plant? 2.Is there anything I can do besides using a high phosphate plant food to encourage more flowers to grow? If I cut of some of the leaves will that leave more room for phosphate absorption by cutting of the nitrogen consumers? I'm new at this so I don't really know. |

I'd wait. Even here in Oregon, morning glories don't do well until the heat of summer. They don't bloom till late August. I think most annuals like it hot, so I never rush them into the ground. There was a thread about how to get a lot of flowers on MG. Some say fertilize, some say not to. I fertilized the year I grew them and got a lot of flowers. |

I planted some blue morning glory's over my swing had the same picture of pretty blue flowers hanging all around .It was pretty for the first part of the morning then they close up and all you have is heart shaped vines but they are pretty to.I planted a running rose with it and had more flowers after the glory's closed.I also planted some double red morning glory's with the blue so they are probally mixed for next year it made tons of seeds. |

I had morning glories come up for several years after I planted them. They were the purple-blue ones. We have real cold temps here in zone 5, but there were taller plants around them to shelter them and they were also next to the house. I haven't seen hide nor hair of them for the past few years, but some yarrow has taken over their spot. |
