I was foraging around my home in southern california and foudn what looked to be a thick, leafy vegatable, sort of like tobacco. I later discovered that the thicvk bunch of leaves was sprouting from a stump, about the width of a flagpole. I have not been able to ID this mystrery tree, but here are some leaf images to help. Welcome to GG, kindpastor. great pics! you might consider reducing them to a smaller size next time. we have some wonderful tree experts on here who will most likely be able to ID this. it won't be me unfortunately. i'm no good at IDing trees.

Well I'd be dog goned if it isn't one of the magnolias. Which one? Can't tell ypou that. If it blooms in the spring, perhaps we can take it a step further. |

My Gawd--a magnolia tree--let me see what else I remember about the plant--the leaves and stalk had a foul odor like BO--the branches had little hollow tubes running through their centers--ANTS were having a feast on the inside of a fallen stalk--thats all I can remember. I thought this was a weed at first because I found seedling growing behind dumpsters, and along railroad tracks. |

some viburnums smell bad. i found this one online> Carolina allspice (Calycanthus), when correctly grown from cuttings, is a shrub with a nice spicy aroma. But inferior plants grown from seed can smell like vinegar. i'm still looking for smelly trees. |

I'll whip out the digicam and snap some photos of the "seedlings" i saw growing around town, hopefully a view of the whole plant will help better than some leaves. |
