My new house should be completed sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's a very modest retirement home and has lots of shade in the front. I do get a little filtered light a few hours a day. Soil is very sandy and we have experience drought conditions here the past couple of years. They house isn't finished, they need to paint and do the shutters on the outside and finish work on the inside and the photo isn't the greatest but it's a blank canvas. Anyone want to play along and give me some ideas on landscaping. I would like shrubs included. I have more sun on the back side and have a few plans for it already.

at the end of our shaded lots we border farm land and then we have a great veiw of the lake. Lots of birds and other wildlife..here's our view

What a beautiful view. You have a job ahead of you. Get out pencil and paper and all the landscape books you can find. Draw out a plan with things you would like in the yard. Be careful about sun and shade. Watch which direction the sun comes from and how it crosses your house in summer and winter. It is yours and should reflect your personality. Keep in mind hardscapes as well like walks, driveways walls, ponds etc. Create a sitting area. You will need a place to sit and rest while out there working. I can see a very nice flowerbed using those two large trees in the front. Good luck. Post pictures of your progress.

Blue Star,

What a wonderful project you have! The view of the lake is something else! I would start with a huge deck off the house with the view of the lake. Maybe the entrance of the home I would plan a English Garden. Seems like you get mostly shade there. But the viewing area of the lake looks tropical. I see even Palm Trees right? I would do tropical off the back. Just a little insight and a start. Best of Everything. Please keep us posted.

Nope, no palm trees but it does look pretty. The porch you see to the left of the house is pretty nice size although it doesn't look it from the angle the picture was taken, it faces the "view". I bought a really nice set of patio furniture to sit on and enjoy the view. It is in sore need of some nice green grass. It's going to be a challenge trying to landscape with all that shade, sand and drought conditions. Thanks for all the ideas.

Hey MommaBear - I loved the graphics - how did you do that? BlueStarMom - remember, just because it's flat now, doesn't mean it has to stay that way - think rocks, more sand, a pond perhaps? though I forget the drought....keep most of the waterway underground??? hummmm. Just some thoughts. If you are like me, I think, think some more, think again, look at lots of books,,, and then one day the plan just sort of hits me like a bolt of lightening!

Since you get a lot of shade and some sun in the front some hydrangeas would be great in that area. Where I live (zone 6) they lose their leaves and die back to the ground during the winter so you would not have anything there for winter interest but you definitely have a wonderful area for hydrangeas and you can't beat those huge flowers they get.
