My wife Becky brought me home a really neat birdhouse today... The opening is just over 1/14 inch, and it stands one foot tall, not including the top thingy... It has a nice hinged door on the back for cleaning too... It's well made of real solid wood, real bark for the roof, and is very solid... Problem is, Ol' Dad here doesn't know beans about what kind of bird its' for, or where and how to position it so it will get used... One idea I have is to place it on a 4 X 4 post somewhere within our garden area. Sink the post in the ground, and hinge is so that once a year I can lower the hose to clean it... Perhaps eight feet off the ground would work well with our landscape... Other options would be up inside one of my blue spruce trees... I have no deciduous trees, only spruce... I sat it on my desk to give a better idea of it's scale... Any advice would be greatly appreciated... Dave

Dont have a clue as to what bird lives near you and would like to move his family there.. cute house, a mouse would love it just put it on the ground with some bread and peanutbutter and you'll be multiplying faster then a calculator*LOL Jokin...

I do however love fancy mice

Hope someone comes along soon!

D'you get Chickadees where you are Dave? Looks like the kind of house they may like, or wrens (they'll nest in a cardboard box if you let them!)

Yes... I just saw a chickadee the other day. I had put some black oil sunflower seeds out.... I ended up hanging the birdhouse from a limb about eight feet off the ground under an open area on one of my blue spruce trees... I have three wren houses out that get used every other year or so..

Hi Dave,

Is that a perch I see on the house? Is so, you need to take it off. Real nestboxes don't have perches. Even if Sparrows can't get in, (and they might if the hole is bigger then 1 1/4") they can sit there and harrass whatever might use it. Chickadees prefer the house under( at least 50% )shade. Ideal for houses to be facing between South to East so the hole is not facing winds and rain most of the time.
How high up is the hole? if it is more then a few inches, check inside to see if the wood is rough or roughed up enough for little birds to get out.

There's a start for you, other wise keep it for decorations.
