Any good ideas for veggies to sow in the fall? I live in zone 8-9. It's just barely fall here.

This morning I sowed some mixed salad, spinach, radishes, turnips and chives (or long skinny green onions, not sure which). Last fall the salad and spinach did very well. I planted radishes and turnips in the spring and just got leaves.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Here I have planted turnips, mustard, collards, rutabegas, onions, brocolli, cabbage, califlower, carrots, lettuce, radish, brussel sprouts, kolhrabi and still have garlic to plant. All these do better for me in the fall/winter verses spring planting. trudy

Wow! Guess I'd better go find some more seeds! Do any of you warm-zone veggie types do companion planting? Last year my broccoli and cabbage got eaten overnight by something. I tried sowing garlic chives in with other things this year (I'm gardening in containers because I don't have much land).

Trudy has it right, but watch out for cabbage loopers.

My little mixed salad seeds are already sprouting, and I just planted them two days ago! They're so CUTE!:tomatodan
Also found some red cabbage seedlings which I bought, and some marigolds to hopefully keep pests away from them.

I find that Marigolds work great in repelling deer.thet don't seem to like the smell of them.

I had over 70 plants going for fall but 20deg weather just hit us along with snow so, not sure if outdoor winter sowing is possible in Mi zone5b!
I had Kale, Collards,Mustard Greens, Turnip Greens, Lettuces,Butternut Squash Celery and winter squash and Flowering Kale and Cauliflower some are gone already, and some were gone before the cold front hit us
I did get to cover some and brought some peppers indoors along with a few other veggies but Im not too hopeful.
Mi weather this year is this gardeners nightmare So much for wintersowing

Im setting the upstairs up to start all the early crops that will not grow (if sown outdoors come spring) then suddenly bolt like always, I usually start around february but may start something earlier.
I think Ill do some out door winter sowing with perennials this year, waitng to see how life is going..

Im happy for those that actually have a fall and spring!
I sure dont.

I tried companion sowing this year and it was ok considering the horrible weather we had.Carrots did wonderful,1st time in years! Potatoes did fine.

Brocc did nothing and didnt try cabbage, chives are suppose to keep some pests at bay...
I use Smartweed to keep those loopers and moths away.
heres what they look like in case you dont know ..

its known to be a weed but I consider it an Herb, used for keeping pests away, just like chives, garlic and dill
I let it grow where ever it wants and pull it and either plant them near or just place it on my collards, kale, mustard greens and bussle sprouts, works wonders!

My fall crop is under plastic *lol

Have A Great Fall Crop!

Thanks for mentioning Smartweed. I just figured out last week that that is what is growing all over the church yard and was trying to decide whether I should snitch some or not. I think I will (I am supposed to be weeding the church yard anyway!) Also, someone on another group I belong to told me that it is edible. At least, the kind called Lady's Thumb is-- she said "Enjoy it raw or sauteed."
