These little guys can tear up a yard overnight. Jeeze. Several things I have tried, some work some don't.

-Do not spot water, they come right to it. Sprinklers or drip hoses work better.
-Poisons don't work and traps are yuckie.
-Use wire cages under everything that you want to keep growing.
-Raised beds with wire under them.
-If your neighbor trys to gas them out they come to your yard.
-Cheapy garden windmills in the hole or along the run, with rocks around the stem, they hate the noise. This does work well.
-Bury dog or cat droppings in the hole, they stay away from that.
-Pick a spot with a lot of weeds you want to get rid of, water well and they go to it and not your plants so much.
-Stomp down all of the mounds. Or open the hole and the run and
stick a hose down the hole and flood it. It breaks down the runs. You have to be on the high side of the run however.
-They don't eat mums, so you can plant them around everything.

Bottom line, I can only control them, not get rid of them.

Anybody have anything else that works?

my neighbor below the hill 'borrowed' one of my cats and used the 'hose down the hole' trick. the gophers had Digby aka Digger(my cat) waiting for them at the other end. Digger made short work of them, too. worked like a charm!

If I'm not mistaken, it was Juicy Fruit gum...still wrapped in the foil...I think the foil might help with their demise.

I should have ask as to which brand...but you could give it a try with different brands of chewing gum!!

My sister, who used to have a farm in Nebraska, insisted this worked for her. I tried it and it did not work for me. Maybe the Nebraska gophers are into gum.

The hose down the hole with the cat waiting is a good one, my dog chases the cats away before they can do their work. There is a local cat that hangs out by the gopher holes in the back field and she captures quite a few.
I tried to tell her to hang out in my yard, but she is not fond of my dog, LOL

My husband thinks that the gophers a good target practice for his BB gun, he hhasn't killed one yet, but he has fun trying.

MG, can you possibly keep the dog in the house a few days so the cat can get busy w/those gophers?

Foz, have tried that and it does work to some extent. My neighbors cat, Teeger does hang out in my yard at night when the dog is in the upper yard.
As long as Frasier doesn't see her, then all H breaks loose until he gets out. He's got a good sense of smell. He's not about to let any intruder in his yard weather he is inside our out.

Plus Teeger is a talker, she likes to let me know when she is visiting, to funny.

Interestingly, I have managed to drive the gophers to the other side of the yard, where there are a lot of weeks to eat. I have a lot of windmills on the side where they were. But "THEY'LL BE BACK" I call them little Arnold Teminators.

Here's a web address to a product that has been proven (both through customer feedback and testing performed by the University of Nebraska) to be very effective for gopher control.
These are savage little beasts, however it appears we have finally accomplished something that has eluded the general public for as long as it has tried to scratch a living from the earth or beautify its surrounding landscape – eliminate these burrowing pests!

This may be wrong but have you used smoke bombs? I know mrmcgregorfence.com sells them. And I know they work. I get the traps are yucky and theis kills them without being yucky really......

good luck

You could try Bounce dryer sheets! Stuff a few in the tunnels then fill them in. The fragrance in the dryer sheet (Oleander) is a natural repelent to gophers and moles. Also tampons dipped in Ammonia stuffed in the holes is a repelent i found usefull before my dog the great hunter was around. HTH
