I'm in Fredericksburg (Zone 7), and this is a perennial, mid-late summer blooming flower, about 10-12" tall.

I would say that it is Melampodium, but I know that it is an annual...not sure what zone it is though, so maybe it would overwinter in zone 7.

They're pretty. They look similar to something that has bloomed from my mom's bird seed, but I never paid attention to the leaves.

No, unfortunately Melampodium will not overwinter in zone 7 either.

It is Melampodium, its an annual. When I pull mine I shake the seeds where I want them next year. trudy

As Jade suggests, Melampodium, probably paludosum. It is zone 8ish, but it is quick to flower and will readily reseed to at least zone 5 (which is why many assume it is a "perennial.")

[edit : sorry trudy, didn't mean to repeat.]
