Wow, I just peeked at the photos of Max's landscape work. INCREDIBLE! You are extraordinarliy tallented!

I have a simple question for you or anyone else. I had planned to put in a walkway this fall and was in the process of buying some pavers when my parents donated a trailer load of free bricks to me. How could I refuse. New plans now need some bricks to be cut. What is the easiest way to go about this, possibly avoiding renting a cutting machine. I only have about 20 to cut in half (no triangular or rounded edges).

Thanks!

When we did our front in block paving, we had a grinder thingy just to start the line where it needed to break and then we had a good old hammer and sort of chisel thing that looked like a fat version of a wallpaper stripper. Anyway we stuck the edge of that along the line and gave it a swift whack with the hammer and 9 times out of 10 the brick broke with a nice clean break.
Hope some of this makes some sense. I am female (i know, lame excuse) and so i'm not sure of the right terms for tools.

I'm with you - I call everything by "this thingy" and "that thingy". My husband gets a kick out of it but loves the fact that I actually know how to use most of them. Anyway, what you said makes sense. I don't think we have anything on hand but I'm sure we can figure something out.

Thanks for the tip!

If you really want to be inspired, go look at his daylily thread! It's amazing he finds the time to do such a lovely job in his own gardens.

Lisa before i received a brick saw...
I just scored the brick with a brick hammer where I wanted the cut..
You could use a chisel and a regular hammer.
Take the chisel where you want your break ...go all the way across it and tap it with the hammer...then take the hammer and tap mid way on either end of the brick...it will break where you scored it...well there has been a few times it doesn't but most generally it will..
