I guess I would consider myself an advanced beginner in veggie gardening. Haven't been doing it all that long, but have seen some unusual happenin's in my short time, in my gardens and those of my gardening friends. Pretty sure many of us have had an oddball tomato or other veggie growing in our patch at one time or another. This one is pretty cool IMO!!

This tomato is an heirloom cultivar named German Red Strawberry. Cannot say enough wonderful things about this variety...so big n' tasty, meaty too, very productive for a tomato this large. Have already harvested maybe 8-10 1lb plus fruits off this plant, with plenty more beginning to ripen. Received seeds from my new, good friend here at GG tomatoman223...AKA Mike H:tomatodan . Tomato pictured is 6.5" across by 3" deep by 4" tall....excluding its "appendage". Probably walked by this fruit 500 times but never saw it until I was collecting some goodies for supper. First 2 pics are of the mutant German Red Strawberry, 3rd pic are of some container chile peppers...checking out my cameras flash and needed some color. Thanks again Mike!!:evilB: :dancing t

Love the "schnozzzzzzzzzz"!!!!! And I'm with Mike.....not sure I'd be saving seed from that "specimen". LOL

Looks like you've more than mastered the tricks of container gardening Erik. Proud of ya! You're either going to be eating allot raw or making a boatload of salsa and other fine fixin's with all those peppers. Lookin' good, kid!!!!

I got some of the German Red Strawberry tomato seed from Mike and they are a very delicious tomato. My tomatos were more of a strawberry shape than the round like yours. It is certianly one that I will plant next year.
Beautiful peppers you have there.

I couldn't agree more Mike. Zana I thank you too!! Well...as I sit here and watch my beloved Boston Red Sox try not to blow their/our 2006 season let me tell ya whats what . Darn Sox. OK. Top row left to right: Hot Paper Lantern, Mirasol(kinda squeezed in there and sort of hidden), Nepali Orange w/ erect fruits and Nepali Orange w/pendant fruits. Middle row: Hot Paper Lantern, and the three orange ones you're curious about are called Hinkelhatz, AKA the Amish Chickenheart Pepper. Bottom three are: another Hot Paper Lantern and two Martin's Carrot Chiles.

Just let me know later this fall if you need some seeds. Have some left over from this years spring sowing and should have plenty of seeds from this years harvest. Have a few plants that are properly isolated and caged. Some of these darn OP peppers seem to cross pollinate if ya even look at em funny...LOL. Productive, cute little plant...maybe get 18" tall by 18" wide. Super dense, unique foliage. This is one hot pepper...they go from green to orange to bright yellow when fully ripened. Not as hot as some of the Habanero or Scotch Bonnet cultivars but significantly hotter than many of the Cayennes. Well IMO anyway. Even if you or others are not into the blistering heat it makes a really cool container or patio plant.

O....and Maggie, the overwhelming majority of the Germ. Red Straw. fruits I have harvested off of this particular plant have been more strawberry or elongated heart shaped than the strange example I gave. Have a good one!!
