Does phlox rebloom when cut back? I've cut the old flowers off but there aren't any new buds. I thought it bloomed until fall.

Is it okay to cut back daylily foliage before it browns completely? The poor thing's been up since January--thought it might want a rest now that it's done blooming.

sweetle,
Are you talking about the tall garden phlox? If so... I am fairly new to it, and sent my daughter to dead head mine. I had intended for her to cut. She came to me and said "Mom, are you sure? Because it's getting ready to re-bloom" I checked it out, and sure enough! It had new buds, right by the old. So we just carefully plucked the dried up blooms.

I cut my tall garden phlox back after a bad storm. It has since rebloomed, but not as fast as I liked. It does rebloom right by dead flowers. So you don't have to cut old flowers off. I cut the flower heads off right by the next leaf junction, because my poor phlox was bent way over from the storm and never perked back up.

Take heart, it could still bloom again for you.

I don't have the tall phlox.....it's about 24 inches tall and I've seen phlox 4 feet tall! I don't know what variety it is. I went and cut the stems down several inches since it didn't look like I was going to get any responses here. Now I know what to do for next year. Thanks for your help!

Sweetle, i have the red phlox and they get about the same height as yours. they bloom for so long i just let them be. they seem to self-clean so i haven't had to deadhead. i've never cut them back.

I didn't see any new buds, and being new at this, I cut them. I know some perennials need to be deadheaded, then they bud again after they rest. So we'll see what happens. I'll update ya!

Tall phlox refers to the taller varieties of phlox. Different cultivars and varieties will differ in height from 18" up to 3-4'.

The phrase "tall phlox" is better understood when compared to creeping phlox which blooms in mid to late spring and is low growing, more of a ground cover.

If you are talking about phlox they may reseed somewhat, but that is not the way they usually proliferate in a garden. That is by sending up new shoots from the parent rootstock.

Your phlox didn't come back for some other reason.

Whit, should I expect a rebloom then, or did I cut off my buds when I cut off the old flowers?
