Hello to all. My husband and I want to redo the lawn. I have some questions as we are fairly new home owners and this will be a new adventure for us. Right now we have nothing but weeds and compacted soil (I mean rock hard). My questions are. Is it true that fall is the best time to start a lawn? What would be the best type of seed and fertalizer to use, We have 2 dogs German shephard and a shephard pittbull mix (large dogs). We live in Ct.Thanks for any help and suggestions. , Kelly

If you have 2 dogs that use the yard, I am not sure if putting down seed would work for you as they would just trample over it. I think putting down sod would be a better alternative, though more expensive.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is finding it. I know home depot carries it but, I am not an expert gardener by any means I don't think it's healthy to leave sod sitting in the sun all dried out (we wont be getting it from there) I will have to do some research in my area. Thanks again, Kelly

You can order sod from a nursery . I would wait unil fall to lay sod, as with this hot weather you would have to give the new lawn an alful lot of water .
I think mid sept would be a better time to lay the sod.
Also train the dogs to use only a certian part of the yard for doing their business as the urin will turn the grass yellow and kill it .

To prevent the urine from killing the grass, you can do what I do. I have a watering can filled with water and I water the areas where my pups go. It works, if you don't mind following them around with a watering can.
