Hi everyone, In the late fall, I would like to dig up and pot my purple fountain grass, it won`t winter here in NW Lower Michigan. Do I just do that and put it in the basement and forget about it `til spring? Or water it every few weeks? Or have it upstairs and keep it as a houseplant? Has anyone in the colder areas ever tried this? Also I bought an annual hibiscus, dark red/purple leaves, it has a miniature blossom, as dark as the leaves(mine hasn`bloomed yet) I saw it in a nursery in blosom, so, liking dark or 'different' leafed plants, I bought one. Can I do the same with it? Any information is always appreciated. Our little corner of Michigan is suffering from lots of heat and humidity...and no rain....just another challenge for gardeners! Have a great day. |

The fountain grass I would give a good hair cut and place in a cool area (your basement would be fine) and water only about once a month. When oyu bring it back out though you will need to harden it off. The hibiscus I would keep as a house plant. It will need a warm, sunny and humid place and you can expect a certain amout of leaf fall when you first bring it in. It too will require hardening off before going back out next summer. |

When you first move it outside, put it in a shady protected area for a few days and gradually move it to sunnier places a few days at a time. I you take it straight out into the hot sun it will sun burn and die. |

I sure have taken a long time to get back here to GG. Thanks MamaBear for the advice, I will do just that with the plants...basement for the fountain grass and a houseplant of the mini hibiscus. Whitmore, I like Fozbot, live near Charlevoix, I`m west of there out in the 'country'. We finally got rain a few weeks ago, and again Friday, actually almost 2''. Gardens are much happier now, as is the gardener!!!!!' Looking forward to a favorite season, Fall. It`s beautiful around here when the color comes on. Thanks again, I always find answers to my questions here, grateful to all....:banana-wa |
