This is my first year growing annual salvia and they're beginning to fade. Should I deadhead them or just leave the spikes? You can't snip them as they fade, since they open from the bottom up. Do I just snip the whole spike off once it fades? They're all fading at the same time, so they would end up without blooms until new spikes come up. Will new ones come up if I snip the faded ones off?

Yes, do dead head them. Go back to the leaf level. It will encourage new blooms to set. Next time take a few as they just start to fade and then wait a week or so and take a few more and so on. That way you will not have that period of no blooms.

Thanks, MB. That's what I was thinking I should have done. It's just so hard to cut blooming flowers. I have others in another garden that are starting to fade, so I'll cut a few there too.

Yup...do it! Besides, you always end up with more when ya do!!! I hate pinching off stuff too, but have to remind myself the same thing...you'll have MORE later!

Glad I did. Look at all the new spikes coming up!

Now, as the first few fade, dead head those to keep a steady bloom going.
