I didn't think it had roots of any kind... What I had and what it looked like where I got it from several yrs. ago. It just floated.. But, I did have a spot at one corner of my pond , that when filled to the brim , it would run off. I think the duck weed went along with the excess water. So I never got to see anything of it... never got it agin cause no one else carried it. I think I had my pond up 4 a couple of yrs. before it became a big thing around here. It has died out faster than it came in... I have to travel to find anything 4 the pond now.. I have been lucky to find plants at all this yr....

Its spread by birds feet from one place to another..sometimes you will get a few pieces of it tangled in the roots of another waterplant..it spreads fast...I never knew it would develop a stem etc..I scoop it out as quick as I can because I regard it as a noxious weed......I have never seen it advertised or sold..........its a pretty shade of light green though.............Queen Bee, the turtle I have in my lily pools occasionally is a vicious snapper with a very fast 6" long neck...One was under an overhanging bush when I was just reaching in blindly to rip out some weeds....(Do not attempt this at home, as they say)....we had a walk-in hound dog who kept me company in the garden and he darted in between me and the turtle, barking madly...When I saw what it was, I held out a stick about the thickness of a pencil and it snapped it in two immediately.............My son in law came over from next door and used a shovel to dump this dinner plate sized monster into a bucket and I put it in my car to take down to the creek..("way down the road)......but on the way down he dumped out, and trying to drive on a country road with one foot in the air must have looked pretty funny, as he scrambled around the floor...........What a relief to open the cardoor and see him leave! PLease be careful....Del

Linda,
Girl puleeze. If you're serious, I can send you plenty. I also have way too many water lilies and way too many water iris' (at least that's what my neighbor calls 'em).

I just hate pulling out a plant and "letting" it die, I mean really... just goes against my nature.

I remeber duckweed in our irragation pond when i was growing up. Never seemed to cause a great deal of harm... didn't clog the pipes or anythinbg like that. The frogs and turtles seemed to get along well in it and the sh itepoke that used to visit regularly aways settled in it to hunt fish.

Kale, depending on which duckweed
you have, you may need a microscope
to see the flowers.

Cazimere, I have one
Thanks for the tip
and while speaking of duckweed WHO doesnt like it, but loves tadpoles and fish!!!???
My tadpole pool and pond were attacked last night I had my duckweed all over the outside and my froggies thrown about ,the water to the tadpoles is very dirty, meaning you cant see through the water at all so someone was in there not too long ago and stired it up something terrible.. it was before 6am when I went out to check on them and saw! Grrr....

Have a great day and hope your pond is safe!

I only have seen the duck weed sold oe it was given to me , from a nursery in Ely, Vermont. About 30 to 45 mins from me. I haven't been there 4 yrs. I was getting water plants from a place closer. No duck weed.
I thought it might be good to create some shade .

Can you mail the stuff with out it dieing.. ?? Waterlillies ??
I would like some if it's possible. 2 of the 3 water plants I got R not showing signs of growing, just 1 lilly. Guess 1 is better than none..
The 2 fish R doing well. I may put 1 of the smaller fish in today. She is spotted with fan tails...

Anyone have a pond vacum ? what type.?

Ok Ponders I have 2 question for you...(sureeee...)
first, should my pond be loosing 4-6 inches of water a day due to the splashing of the water and evaporation? (it does get lots of sun almost all day with time between of shade from a nieghboring tree)
2nd.Hubby bought me 2 preplanted hardy water lilies,it says nothing about putting it in a pot with soil and pebbles but the man in the store said I was suppose to ,now the instruction dont say put it in a pot or soil just says prepotted what does prepotted mean in ponding terms *lol
It says simply drop netted bag into your pond, no more then 16inches till you see growth then lower it.

These lilies are suppose to change color with the seasons
And are ok to bring in and over winter them in the garage and split in the spring ..Does that sound correct? O.k... 3 questions *lol

Thanks Again Ponders!

Kale..it depends on the size of the pool, and if its a flexible liner pool...water can escape at the edges, ..............but that does sound excessive..sounds like a leak or your fountain is falling on the ground as well as in the water...feel the dirt around the edges, if you can't see where it is falling. Fountains usually have a screw on the outlet tip that adjusts how big or small you want it to be.,like in the big bubble type...........Another factor could be a very thirsty dog, or wind, blowing your water away from the pool.............?
