!! #%&*(&%#@!%^&*!!! clematis!

There. Had to get that off my chest. Bought a Group 2 clematis in April, it bloomed, grew about 2 feet, set buds for its second bloom, then the base of the vine turned dry and brittle and one vine (the strongest one) wilted. Two more vines have new leaves but the base looks even worse than the other--it's actually split. I bought this vine from the clematis society and was never told to plant the vine several inches underground in case it succumbed to wilt.

Have you lost a clematis to wilt? What happened to it? Did it come back later in the season? The following year? Never?

We left our first clematis in the pot too long and it "died", but I planted it anyway and it came back the following year. It's doing great now--well, at least it was a few minutes ago.

Sweetle, I've never had clematis wilt on mine. Are you sure it was wilt as that is a fungal disease? You may get new growth come up. When the other vines get long enough, why don't you take a clipping to root?

Sorry Sweetle I am new to them. I hope it comes back. My two are growing freely but no buds so far.

I cut off the wilted vine and put it in a container of water and Superthrive. I remember reading how to root clematis...I think you put the stem on the ground, hold it with a rock, and cut it off the mother plant when it roots. Not sure what I'll do with it next as it'll be a miracle if it roots in water.

Every clematis vine is precious when it's a new plant. What a bummer!

Sweetle, when some of my vines snapped off from the wood parts, I just cut them and shoved them into the dirt and most root for me okay. I guess you could try some rooting hormone too.

It would be worth it, Penny. Thanks.

Hope they root for you. That's suppose to be one way to propagate them. Cuttings.

Sweetlebee,

I planted 5 clematis two years ago in the fall. Last spring they all came up okay, but one, after reaching about 18" died back and disappeared. I was told it was probably wilt. I snipped it off and disgarded the infected stems. This year it's up, doing really well, looking nice and strong and is at least as tall as 3 of the others I planted at that time (the 5th one (Mdme Julia Correvon) is over 6ft of new growth this year and is doing great, but the others are all under 3ft so far).

I don't know about yours coming back this season (mine didn't at all last year), but it's certainly worth a wait until next season. Also, I've heard/read once the stems turn 'woody' they don't suffer from wilt anymore. Good Luck!

Thank you for giving me hope! The stem I cut off had green inside, which surprised me. I have my fingers crossed for the other two vines, which are growing from the split base. My other Group 2 clematis should flower this year. Hopefully I'll have some of the this year's wood survive so I can see a spring bloom next year. I think I've seen 2 flowers on that clematis and this is its 3rd summer! I bought Etoille Violet, a Group 3, for my front porch, but those are supposed to be much easier to grow than the large-flowered clematis. Here was my baby before she left me.

What a relief.............I am not alone in my Clematis catastrophies.............they are so beautiful, and every year I buy more...and they all succumb to wilt..and right now they are still blooming well but the greenery is about 1/3 brown............even spraying every other week with fungicide really doesn't seem to stop it.....I have all three classes of Clematis and our local nursery says just trim them all back to 10-12 inches in the Spring.....Like Peonies, the browned leaves contaminate the soil below, so I try to pick them all off, but sometimes they are just too tangled....Jackmanii is the exception..it just grows like a weed and doesn't mind if I chop out whole sections when it gets too rampant....and it hasn't wilted yet...so I can rule out my soil as the culprit...........You sure titled this right!
