I still haven't planted my big deck container! Here it is from last year. I put a hardy fuchsia in it which wasn't so hardy after all. I'd like to try something different this year.

In the cedar deck planter I went with a deep purplish burgundy, white and lime theme with petunias, snapdragons, nemesia, and Creeping Jenny. Now I need something tall for the center of the clay pot. I don't like the tropical look too much (cannas, phormium, etc.) but I do like other fine grasses and spiky plants. I'd really like to use white and light blue or dark blue lobelia as a trailer. I need some ideas for the main center plant and for some fillers.

I'd like to stick with annuals or perennials that I can put out into the garden in the fall. I don't want to overwinter anything in that pot. I will probably move it to the front corner of the deck near the lavenders, where the smaller planter is in this pic.

Sweetle, i saw the coolest grass at the nursery last week that would work for you. it was a little larger than those grassy spikes florists use in planters but it was the same form and had burgundy and a foxy red(auburn) sheen to the blades. wish i could remember what they were called. i'd never seen them before. if i get back to the nursery i'll try to snap a pic if you'd like. let me know.

How about a minature standard rose bush for the centre. You could plant that into the garden in fall. You could alternate blue and white lobelia around it.

I'm interested, Foz, I'm interested!

I bought 2 new roses last month, Sash, so I think I'd like a new plant to get excited about. I'm thinking about something spiky to give it some height.

I'm also keeping in mind the terra cotta color of the pot. Pastel flowers are out! I think the dark blue lobelia would look good against the terra cotta and with the burgundy petunias in the cedar planter. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not that fussy about getting it perfect. I'm new to containers and annuals, so I'm willing to experiment.

Foz, I saw what I'm sure is the same thing at our garden centre. We'll have to compare and see whether it is the same one. A nice alternative to the usual green spikes.

I guess you want a fancy spikey plant not just the regular spikes. They have some new colours in spikes, like I said on CRC, I saw one in a lovely chocolate colour that would look wonderful in your terra cotta pot. It would definately go nicely with the blue but I would add some white to the pot as it makes the other colours pop.

What would make you think that we think you are fussy.

I'm looking through one of my books and see a variegated sweet flag, Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', that I like. Also fountain grass. They look nice, not too overwhelming for a container, but I know nothing about grasses.

What other plants would look good in a container with a grass?

I love fountain grass, Sweetle. It's an annual here, but I bought it again this year (purple fountain grass). To me, it's worth the cost.

How tall and wide does it get? Does it come in different colors? The pot is 18 inches wide and 15 deep.
