I started a new garden today! :o...... This garden is one I've been wanting to start for a while. The special thing about this garden is that I used several members' suggestions of placing newspaper over the grass and piling it with soil. So we'll see how that works out. I expanded the section in front of the bin, extending it to the front of the deck on the left side. I still have to put some kind of edging around it, I guess. There's a Russian Sage (perovskia) beside the deck in front of the one bin. Beside it, at the far side, in front of the other bin is where the tall yellow grass will go (possibly a Karl Foerster). I'd like to put something tall beside the steps to hide the BBQ and paraphernalia. I haven't thought about the rest of the garden yet. The back yard faces east, so it gets morning sun. I'm in zone 5. I've taken pics with a few different angles. (Don't mind the seedlings and plants on the deck, they'll go soon.) Ok, start designing!

Following on my success of the redesign of Blue's Christmas Village, here are my suggestions: What if you put your BBQ on the other side of the deck, which would give you clear access to the door and give an unobstructed view into the yard? It looks cramped on that side. I think something really tall on that side of the deck would look off-balance because the bed is small. (She said the taller the better, to hide the BBQ.) How about a vine growing on the railing instead, then plant some smaller shrubs and perennials around the base of the deck? How about expanding the bed on the left side of the deck too? It's begging for a nice curve wrapping around that corner. |

I was thinking that originally, Sweetle, but from inside the house, the BBQ would obstruct the view of my gardens. I'd rather not look out at the ugly BBQ. When you sit on the couch in the living room, you see the lantern and that side of the deck as well as the side of the back garden where the lilacs are. Also on that side of the deck is the eletrical outlet where my little water fountain plugs into.

Okay, then move the BBQ like I suggested, put in some lattice along that side of the deck, and grow the vine! Then develop the bed under the window so you have something to look at. When I was little, I used to cry when my mother brushed my hair. Her famous last words were, "If you want to be beautiful, you have to suffer." If you want your garden to be beautiful, you have to make some sacrifices. Move the darn BBQ!

I would buy 4 paving stones and get the BBQ off the deck and out of sight round the corner of the house maybe. Could you take pics from a distance so we can see the whole back of the house with the deck? |

You tell her Sash! The BBQ's gotta go! I have mine on the side of the house because it's a charcoal grill, and really, it's no big deal to wheel it around to the grass. If she moved the BBQ, she could put a window box planter on the railing too! (Trying to sweeten the pie, or whatever that saying is.) |

I agree that you could grow a vine on the railing, I'd add railing to the side with the outlet too, and put a vine there too. Wrap that left side with a similar curved garden. Put a nice big flat stone at the base of the step and run the garden even on both sides. coral bells, any color you like, chose it for it's leaves or it's flowers. Lamium (dead nettle) for a ground cover (purple, white or yellow flowers). Really tall early tulips, day lily, asiatic lily. If you plant something really tall in front of the composters, what kind of path will you make to be able to get into them? What about a shrub? Magic Carpet spirea stays shorter, but there are many species that get taller. One shrub could hide them once it matures. Bridal Wreath blooms around now in white, others later. |

"What is with that crooked rail on the front of the deck?" asks Sweetle, with the utmost love and respect.
