Siberian iris have height and clump nicely. Hydrangeas do well in shade and can be kept to any size you want. Different colors od hostas are nice too. I have some Stella D'Oro daylilies in my shade garden and they do well even though they say to plant in full sun. Dusty miller is doing well there too. And evening primroses. |

Hello girl and they all sound nice but this will be in the front of the bed and don't want them to get to high maybe 24 inches and do like the color of white cause I have some lily of the valley planted there and though they do not last to long I think white looks so good with all of the different color of green?bye for now Rita |

Rita, The dusty miller, small hostas, primroses and stella d'oro daylilies only get about 12 inches high. |

white astilbe sounds like it might a good choice depending on how much afternoon sun they would get. astilbes really prefer morning sun and mostly shade to partial shade. astilbe White Gloria has blooms that reach 2-3' and bloom mid to late summer. astilbe japonica Irrlicht reaches 2' and blooms in late Spring. astilbe Snowdrift reaches 2' and is a sport of Irrlicht and blooms midseason. i'll post a pic of Snowdrift for you. Rita, sorry i didn't follow this thread after i posted. i'm growing the white astilbe for the first time myself this year(planted it last year). don't you love the look of it? it's very showy! i've grown the red before and the bloom time isn't very long. not sure about the larger whites. i'll be finding that one out myself this season. if an extended bloom time is what you're after i'd suggest getting more than one variety so you have blooms all season long. they are heavy feeders so keep them fertilized and they like to be kept moist. p.s yup...it'll come back. it's a perennial and hardy in your zone.

Here's what a bed of astilbes looks like. There isn't a purple variety to my knowledge. I do have a dwarf astilbe that is a rosy purple though. |
