Is my lawn trying to re-seed itself?

Hi,

I live in IL zone 5. My lawn is basically made of Kentucky bluegrass and fescue here in the Midwest. I've noticed that it is producing these blades of grass which appear to have these little seeds growing off of them. Will these seeds eventually fall off and "Naturally Seed" my lawn if I put off mowing? Can lawns actually re-seed themselves? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

I have the same question. My lawn has never had seedheads before but right after we mowed the first time, it grew back full of seedheads. Other lawns on my street are doing the same thing. I practice good mowing procedures, so I'm wondering what's different this year. I thought one of the grasses in the mix might be taking over. We do have a compaction problem.

It is very normal for turfgrass to produce seedheads at this time of year.

They all produce(fescue and bluegrass) seed heads this time of the year. They are immature seeds and will not grow unless you let them mature(about a ft. tall) and dry.

The grass will try to reseed an area, but without some help, not much will germinate. The grass seed needs some loose soil in order for the roots of the newly germinated seed to penetrate. I wouldn't depend on grass self-reseeding to produce a viable area of turfgrass.
