I recently bought 2 15" hanging ferns ( Boston ferns). I have had them hanging on my front porch. It gets partial sun. I move them during the heat of the day ( which hasnt been much lately), so they are shaded and hang them back up. We've had a lot of rainy, dreary, cold days lately and my ferns look horrible. They looked smashed in on one side ( wind perhaps?) tips are brown, saggy, just horrible. Because of the colder temps, I decided to bring them in. I ran a hot shower and put them in the bathroom to steam hoping this migh perk them up.

When it warms up again, should I put them back on the front porch or find a more shady spot for them. Id like to keep them to winter inside next year.

thanks in advance.

They can't tolerate temps below 45-50 degrees so that might be an issue if you have them out at night.

And since they grow great on the floor of a forrest, my guess is THE MORE SHADE, THE BETTER.

I've just moved a fern to a spot under my Birch tree, hoping it will flourish there. The last owners of this place had it in full sun, which fried the frons. What on earth were they thinking?

Thanks everyone! I brought them in yesterday, gave em a nice steam 'bath", trimmed them and they have really perked up. Not great mind you, but I see an improvement. I decided to put them in the back yard when it warms up, much more shade.

my ferns thrive in the light they get from a sky light about 10' above them, and a flourescent light that is on during the day. I put them on my porch in the summer, where they get full shade, no sun at all! and like Kat said, they don't like it too cool.
