Hi all!

I have a home composter which has produced some lovely compost over the winter. However, over the last couple of days, every time I take the cover off, swarms of what look like fruit flies emerge . I'm not sure that they are actually fruit flies, but they're the right size, and I've been putting a lot of fruit parings in lately.

Does anyone know (1) what these things are, (2) if they're harmful (to the compost, or to me!), and if so, (3) what I should do about them? If they're not harming my compost, I'm inclined to just let them be, as annoying as they are.

Thanks!

Hi Newby!! Welcome to the forum. Sounds like ye have too much green and not enough brown's in yer compost.I used to get that during the prime fruit season's. If ye don't have any dry leaves/grass ye can shread newspaper and add it and stir well. Again Welcome!!

Thanks Herbyann! We have *tons* of dry leaves under the deck (no one bothered to rake them last fall :o ), so I added a big armful this evening. I figure by the time I get rid of last fall's leftover leaves, it'll be time to start raking this fall's!

That's great having leaves!! I didn't even say anything about the fruit flies (my bad) They are harmless, but a big nuisance in yer face. Jus be sure and Dig yer fresh kitchen stuff into the older stuff. What kind of composter do you have? I keep a little hand rake by the compost to dig a hole to put the fresh stuff in then cover it. If it's a lot add leaves or other brown's at this time.
