I know banana peelings are suppose to be good for roses but I can't remember how many to a gallon of water and how many days to soak. Only water them once with the banana water???? Also bury peelings around the roses? Hope Prettylady or someone will come along and tell me. I think she posted it somewheres last yr. I searched for it but couldn't find it. Going to copy it this time and save it |

Some people swear by burying their banana peelings around the roses. The only prob with digging these things in is it disturbs the feeder roots that are close to the surface. I really like to put all that stuff in the compost pile and then use the compost on my roses or feed them some nice compost tea.

Hmmmmmm I just toss the whole peeling under the bushes. Or you can use a food processor and blend it up, add a little water and pour it underneath the rose bush. I also put overripe bananas out there. I don't know if you can put too much of a good thing on a rose but mine seem to like it although I don't eat that many bananas and have several rose bushes to feed. |

Laurie I take three banana peelings to a gallon of water... Put the top on it and set it in the sun for three days... I water my roses with it but I also add 1 cup per tomato plant... My climbing rose bush is so full of buds... For the tomatoes I do no more than one cup... thru experimenting with more there will be more vine and few tomatoes... With just one cup...both vine and larger tomatoes... Peggy |

Peggy Hi Peggy- I just planted a potted Don Juan climbing rose yesterday--my first rosebush!! :broccoli: I have a few (o.k., a bunch) questions: 1. Is it too early to do the banana treatment? I know I'm not supposed to fertilize for six weeks, or so, but what about organic treatments like this? 2. Also, I couldn't find the bud union on this particular rose. I left about 1 inch between the ground and where the canes start. Is that o.k.? 3. I also noticed that a couple of canes looked like they had been pruned and are kind of brown on the very top. Should I prune them down to the green part of the cane? 4. Should I deadhead the couple of places where it previously bloomed? This particular climber is supposed to be very hearty in my zone, so I'm crossing my fingers and toes that it survives. Wish me luck and thanks for your help! |

This banana stuff is very interesting. I'd like to know if the banana mix is also good for rooting rose cuttings. I have a small broken rose branch in a glass of water and I'm wondering if adding a snip of banana peel will make it get roots faster. Julia |

Thanks everyone for the info. Will take my peelings out of the freezer if it ever stops raining here and use them on the roses |
