They don't have holes in them, do I need to drill holes in the bottom of them before i put the dirt in and plant? I'm thinking I need to. Thanks |

I would drill some drain holes. Even if its not watertight now, after you plant and water, the ribs may swell and it may become watertight. |

also another good idea is to place barrel on pavers if you don't want the bottom rottening out.... I am guilty of not putting my barrels on anything and bottoms are starting to rot out... good news is I have a whole wiskey barrel to cut into as soon as I siphon the rest of the wine out of it.. I have a 1/2 barrel and planted some flowers in it. I did put holes in the bottom and then added some small rock to help with the moisture so it wouldn't rot the bottom out. They will last for many years. Here is a photo of the plants that I planted at the time. I did orginally plant tomatoes in this barrel and had sooo many tomatoes I didn't know what to do with them all. I have had this barrel for at least 10years and is still in great shape. I've heard about one man who made wine out of water, but never of one who made wine out of whiskey! PL can you walk on whiskey too?

I didn't know you could put so many plants in a whiskey barrel! Those look awesome! Flowersgalore, what are the pink flowers in your barrel? They're so pretty. And Pacificstar, how did your peppers do in the barrel? All I have in my three half-barrels are English roses, one rose per barrel. I didn't know you could put more than one plant in them. My husband suggest we plant some of the green peppers we just bought in with the roses but I don't think that would look good at all. We did drill three holes in the bottom of each barrel. Then we added a little coconut fiber mat and then about 3" of gravel before filling the barrel with a soil/peatmoss/composted manure mixture. I hope this link to a photo of drilling holes works. And here are the coconut fiber inserts we cut from hanging baskets to fit in each barrel. I couldn't find just plain sheets of coconut fiber so we had to cut up pieces from hanging baskets. I'm a beginning gardener so I just made up the coconut fiber layer. But it didn't make sense to not put something down there because surely the dirt would eventually wash out, right?. I hope it works. Julia |
