I thought since the store sold the Ostrich roots at planting season they would be sprouting in at least a couple of weeks. I bought two Van Zycerden Nursery's bulb size #1 roots from Walmart, planted them a month ago, in a light mixture of Perlite (Schultz's), Sphagnum Moss (Better-Gro's), ............................................http://www.schultz.com/[/ URL]................http://www.sunbulb.com/pottingme dia.html and Potting Soil (Markman's), lightly watered it with Plant Food (Peter's), http://minerals.usgs.gov/ minerals/pubs/commodity/peat/peatdir04.pdf.. .......................http://www.petersplantfood.com/ http://www.iowadnr.com/was te/recycling/mulch/suppliers.html#county and have been watering them lightly twice a week, once with plain tap water and once with the plant food. Makes it kind of embarrassing to my family that my plant house decorations are turning out so plain, less our expectations of the growing larger leaves around the house. |

Donna, i haven't grown ostrich fern before but usually after putting in a new plant i give it a really good soaking to make sure the roots are moist and no air is trapped around the roots. when getting new plants established it's important to keep them pretty well watered at first. put your hose right down next to the base of the plant and let it run for a few mintues. it may seem excessive but that's what they need. after the plant is established water less frequently and water deeply. if the ground has been dry a trick i use after watering is to stick my finger into the soil a few inches to see if the water is running off or soaking in(which you want). good luck w/your ferns!

Donna: Are they planted in a pot or outside in the ground? If they are in a pot you could try putting the pot in a plastic bag like a mini greenhouse. Also don't fertilize until you see signs of growth. Sorry I've never planted these before either. By the way, welcome to GG. |

Are they actually up and green yet? Most ferns don't like fertilizer at all, and it will burn the roots and kill them. some completely organic fertilizer mixed about 1/4 strength every 6 months or so is more than enough. |
