I was wondering if anyone could give me any information about growing okra in container. My son bought some seed packs last year and I went ahead and started them for him. Now i have this unexpected little arrival and unfortuantely I am not sure where to start with him/her. I was just hoping that someone could help me. Thanx soo much in advance. |

I haven't been able to grow okra here. The nights are apparently too cold. But my Dad grew it in California. He had a nice garden there though. I think I would try a 5-gallon bucket though for a container. Those plants get to be about 4' tall if I remember right. |

Hey! I wonder if I can grow it in the greenhouse. I had some okra seed that I couldn't get to germinate a while back. Maybe that's what I should put by the long wall this year. Ummm are the plants stalks or do they need to climb like peas? It's been a long time since I had any decent okra. |

Well, I guess I need to get a rather large pot. Ehat kind of feeder is it? I mean does it like lost of phosphorus or nitrogen or what? I just like to know because since I container garden I like to mix special potting mixes for each pot and baby that I put in it. Plus I am trying to go as organic as I can. I just like the results better and the flavor of the veggies seems better. Thanx |

I can't help you there. I tried growing okra here in Oregon but didn't have very good luck with it. I think our climate is too cool, especially at night. |

A friend sent me seeds a couple of years ago. I put them in out in the greenhouse but they never germinated. I might try again. |

I am originally from Alabama so I have to have my okra. Here in Oregon I have grown some nice okra for the last two years. The most important thing is warm soil and sunshine. Put your containers,BLACK ones work best,on the south side of your building. Use about twenty per cent pearlite added to your soil for good drianage. Plant around June 15 when the night time air is staying 55 degrees. I bring my buckets in at night and put them back out in the morning sun to keep the soil temperature up on cool nights. The Dwarf varieties will start bearing when the plants are about 16-24 inches tall and will bear until frost. |

What part of Oregon are you in? I am in Newberg (Yamhill County). |

HAHAHAHAHA night time air.... 55... HAHAHAHA.... Sorry, I am in Alaska and it's not that predictable. Things up here act very strangely. It is all test and discover. The long daylight hours of summer seem to create sort or a mutant of what grows. Otherwise it just doesn't grow. |
