Is moss growing on the cinder blocks? I've read where you can actually make moss by blending pieces of it with buttermilk and woodland compost tea and applying it to rocks, cement, etc. If you want the "recipe", I'd be happy to post it for you. |

Does anyone know if stonecrop will grow in the shade? I saw some beautiful plants this afternoon at my local nursery, and I would love to have them grow in my shade garden. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've know these plants as "Live for ever" or "Live anywhere". My mom grows them in a full shade garden under tons of oak trees. They don't get as tall or bloom as well as in some sun or full, but then have been there for 25+ years. What ones did you see? You were talking about the upright type, not ground cover right? |

At my old house, I had something in crevices in a stone wall and it really takes off with little yellow flowers. It had only a little morning sun. I have it here in the new house too in almost full sun in a rock garden. I can't remember the name at all though! I'll post a picture and someone will know. Does the area get any sun? |

Thanks for the info. Sweetlebee. I already know about making moss, but I was really hoping for some small shade tolerant perennial plants. I have some large ferns, but they are too big for these 1x3" holes. I guess I'll have to just keep looking. Thanks for your help. :banana-wa |

I didn't know the holes were that small! There are many miniature ferns. I was thinking of something like a maidenhair, but I'm not sure if they'd be ok in a 1X3. I'm going to a plant sale this weekend and there's usually a fern nursery there, so I'll get some info about small ferns for you. Maybe you should ask this question in the Shade and Woodland Garden thread. I think more people are interested in shade plants than stonecrop (though I love both!) so more might see your question. |
