OK, Firstly Hi to all! I am new to your site, but not new to ponds. First thing I have to say to all the people who are cleaning out their ponds on a regular basis is STOP! This is the worst possible thing you can do, all you are doing is removing water that is trying to balance itself out, by means of evaporation and deconstruction, all of the chemicals which are in tap water will help algae to grow, stop replacing it, if you must, collect rain water and let it sit for a few days then add it. (never replace all the water, keep at least 1/8 to a 1/5 minimum, you need the bacteria that is in the water, it helps the waters natural environment) I have had ponds for many years, you can not get rid of algae, its like weeding your garden... its only a matter of time before the weeds return, unless you are constantly working on it.

My new pond is 8200 litres, and I have around 18 gold fish biggest at 25cm and smallest at 15cm all hand readed which are breeding like crazy (YAY!) I have a crap load of oxygen weed and a few water lilies, about 1/8 of my ponds surface is uncovered and I don't have an algae problem, there is algae along the sides of my pond but no green or brown water.

I have always used filters in all of my ponds, big or small and they all kept the algae under control, I have never bought a filter in my life, and use NO CHEMICALS, not even barley bales or exstract.

I'll post up a picture of my latest filter in my next posting. Cost me around $300-NZD

Stop replacing tap water!

If your pond is in direct sunlight you will not be winning any battles anytime soon, there is no quick fix for you!

BIGGEST MYTH OF ALL!!! Uv lights DONT KILL ALGAE, the sun give off uv rays so why doesnt that kill the algae? Because algae need uv to grow, UV lights just bunch the algae growth together so that a filter can do its job. Dont beleive web sites or anyone who says "An Ultra Violet light solved my problem" Bollock's!

U.V. Light/Clarifier/Filter = Same thing
in use with a-
Mechcanical filter
and a -
Biomedia filter
will improve an ponds problems, "IMPROVE NOT SOLVE"
Your hands are the best tool your pond has got to use. USE THEM REGULAR!

Best of luck...
Garry

Its been a while. I agree with you on what you said. BUT i dont get one part of your post. How can you have used filters in all your ponds but never bought one in your life?? Sorry, im just really curious on how you pulled that off. If you made it yourself, would you mind sharing how you did it? Cuz my father and I have just dugged a small pond in my backyard and he may want a filter for that.

thanks,
Aaron
