Remove mulch when adding new?

Got another newbie question for you lovely folks:

Should I be removing old mulch when I add new mulch on top? I understand that mulch decomposes and incorporates itself into the soil over time, but does this happen fast enough to be able to just pile more on top? If so, what's the appropriate depth of new mulch to add?

Thanks!

I never removed old mulch. The previous mulch mostly disappears from year to year anyway.

Hmm... Mine definitely hasn't disappeared since last fall, and it honestly doesn't seem a whole lot less deep.

If you mulched in the fall it may not have had time to break down too much. I mulch in the spring.

I think it would also depend on what you are using for mulch. My bark dust mulch is still very much intact.

If you dig your old mulch in, in the fall it should break down and add to the garden soil. What I do is leave it in place for the winter and then stir it up a bit in early spring, pulling it away from my plants so the ground can warm up around the plants. After I get done moving my plants and planting new ones I add more mulch by mid June . The old mulch really adds to your soil structure.
