Liking thing very tidy looking I am always drawn to small neatly mounded plants and shy away from many taller plants due to their floppy look. The taller flower I have now are, delphiniums, foxgloves, bee balm columbines, lilies, daylilies, beards tongue, phlox, Iris, asters, peony and probably a few more that dont come to mind at this moment. What does anyone grow that is tall but not huge, neat looking and either, white, pink, blue or purple? Something you really like. I am in zone 8
Thanks

For the shade, I love toad lilies and Solomon's Seal and they do great here!

How about Aconitium (Monkshood)? There are a number of varieties - in the deep purple to blue-purple range. I've had them in half shade as well as full sun and they've done well in both. They grow about 3 to 4 ft tall....sometimes more. Bloom time is generally in the fall.

try ligularia 'The Rocket' for shady spots, too. the foliage stays relatively low but the flower stalks get pretty tall...and they don't flop.

I do have 1 yellow plant , a very soft yellow mini rose but other than that I just do not like yellow or orange in my garden. Very pretty in other people,s but not mine.

For white try shasta daizy, Becky. Nice stout stems that don't flop.

For blues, pinks and purples try garden phlox.... 'Little Laura' comes to mind as a nice pink/purple.

Yes, they sure give us something to look forward to in October! BTW, the variegated Solomon's Seal has lovely white edging on the leaves. Astilbes are another nice shade plant with a tall plume. I haven't grown tiarellas yet, but they also have spiky flowers. Both of these plants have pink or white flowers. I also have a meadow rue that gets 6 feet tall and has a purple stem, green/purple leaves and purple flowers! It's tidy despite its size--tall and narrow. These plants all do fine here with morning sun too.

Japanese anemones are another good choice for fall, in either pink or white. Mine are in sun--maybe they also like part shade. Crocosmia is another nice sun-lover and is available in yellow. I like it because it's an interesting plant after bloom as well. Agapanthus, blue lily-of-the-nile, seems to do well here too.

Liatrias is tall in purple or white. has a neat grassy leaves.
Russian sage is a woody shrub that can get tall and has lavender flowers
Star gazer lily is dark purple and white and smells great.
Matrona sedum has purple blooms in the fall and the leaves are a purplish tinted green
Huskers red penstemon has white flowers and the floiage is a beautifull dark purple/bronze. The leaves are a nice compact mound after it blooms.
