Looks like your yard is waking up all right. Is that first one going birding? What kind of snakes are they?

First one is a 6 ft plus Rat snake that is going squirreling. The tree he's climbing is over a foot thick. for scale
Second is probably a baby Black Rat snake.

Were these 4 different snakes? or just 2 in different areas? Wish I had a snake to take care of the rotten squirrels in my attic! They got in late last fall after their tree nest was destroyed in a storm.

I think they're beautful Caz. Is the Rat snake a tad skinny from hibernating or does his rippling muscles always show like that? I must say I find them fascinating. I had a good size Garter snake in my yard last year. Luckily the grand-kids were here for the day so they got to see it. They still talk about it. Also the big Bull frog that peed on my grandson. Well I told him not to pick it up or it would do that but kids will be kids. Of course, he picked it up with the face end away from him. He thought it was cool but his sister did the, "Oow, yeuck!"

I believe it's a defense reaction for when they are caught in the open, with no cover, they freeze like that. It breaks up their smooth snake-like outline. When i go away, they smooth back out.

Like I said, fascinating. I never cease to be amazed by nature. I remember when I moved here and saw my first old water bug in the kids paddling pool, it was at least 3" long, scared the bejeezes out of me until I knew what it was. Do you get them around your place too? They're ugly brutes.

My neices (15 & 16) came over to camp out a while back and one of the big Rat snakes fell out of the tree about 10 ft from them. Had to protect the poor snake from them. They ran over to it and were chaseing it around, trying to take live pictures with their cell phones so all their friends could see.

that's an odd looking snake, Caz. looks like he's been run over several times by a four-wheeler. it almost looks as though he's braided.
