Hello all. I am new to the forums actually I,ve been lurking awhile.

I am a transplant from Illinois and have been in Tennessee for 3 yrs now.

I bought a southern magnolia at a flea market last spring and it's growing pretty

good about 1-1/2 ft this year. It's about 5 ft tall and the trunk is about 2

inches wide. It has little buds growing from the stem of the leaves, I was
wondering if these were flowers or new leaves

I dont know if its leaves but it sounds beautiful. I just planted two today in front of my barn. I had one that was about fifty feet at my old house. They sure are beautiful. I can't wait for them to grow. They are about 4 feet.

Unless it is a cultivar that flowers at a younger age (like 'Little Gem'), it probably will not flower at 5 feet tall.

I have the Claudia Wannamaker variety, and they have bloomed at 4', but then they are supposed to top out at 20'. The flower buds swell very rapidly, getting very plump fast; the leaf buds remain long and slender. If the buds are 2" long and thicker than you're little finger, they may very well be flower buds.

I bought a wax leaf magnolia. The big tree with the huge blooms. It was starting and had good roots. I planted it in a flower pot. It has rained rained and and I don't know it that is the problem but all the leaves are turning brown and falling off. Do you have any suggestions? sandyt46
