I bought a Daniel Deronda clematis this weekend. I'll need to plant something at the base to shade the roots as it gets full sun. The clematis society lady said I need to plant a shallow-rooted plant. She suggested cranesbill or a Rozanne hardy geranium. My clematis is purple and I'd like a flowering plant in a color other than purple. Maybe white, yellow, or pink. Would a flower carpet or Knockout rose be a good choice? What other suggestions do you have? Also, does anyone have the clematis varieties with the tiny bell-shaped flowers? Got a pic? I'm thinking of growing one on my fence. Thanks! |

I can't tell you about the flower capet rose but I have two hardy Geranium. One is violet blue, Rozanne but the other is pink with dark purple veining, Bloody Cranesbill. It's a dwarf form. The Rozanne grows to a height of 45 cm and the Cranesbill to a height of 20 cm. Hope this helps. |

I have mulched, but I need a plant as it's on the corner of my deck and needs something in front of it to complete the border. Here's a pic. I need to landscape the entire front of my deck. The side shade garden has been planted, but I'm not too good at knowing what sun-loving plants to put all along the front. |
