My entire back lawn is covered with these things. I originally thought they were rose of sharon seedlings, as in the past that tree has gave me alot of headaches with the seedlings it throws everywhere. But there are not many at all around the base of the rose of sharon so I am thinking otherwise. I have already treated the lawn with Scotts weed and feed pellets. It's a week now and these things are still going strong. Now I have Turfbuilder plus 2 Weed Control in a hose end sprayer but I cant use it for another 2 weeks at least since I just used the dry formula. Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It looks like henbit (lamium amplexicaule) or purple deadnettle. I have that weed everywhere and it is a pain to get rid of. |

Well whatever it is I guess it's going to be a pain to get rid of. I dont understand where it came from and how it got out of control so quickly. Last year my lawn was perfect, not a weed in sight. Then all of a sudden the snow melts away this year and my lawn is covered with these weeds. My raised beds are all around this same area too so I am worried if I use too much weed killer its going to affect my other plants. Even if it doesnt directly affect them I woudlnt want the weed killer being absorbed by the vegetables. I think I might just spray the liquid turfbuilder/weed control tommorow, as right now these are centered in the lawn pretty much and havent gotten too close to the raised beds. At least that way I can avoid spraying right next to the beds. Worst that can happen is it all burns from too much fertilizer/weed killer, but as long as the weeds burn away with it I wouldnt care. EDIT: After looking at www.weedalert.com so far I am leaning towards Purple Deadnetle. It does look similar to Ajuga/Bugleweed but it doesnt seem that is common in my area, whereas purple deadnetle is. |

Hi Goanna :banana-wa Those look to be in the mint family, although I've never seen that type of weed/plant in my area before. In another thread you mentioned that you have a few varieties of mints planted, do you think that one or more could have spread into your grass? Have you pinched/rubbed the leaves and gave them a smell? If they have a minty aroma, they could be seedlings from your other plants? They sure appear to be very invasive.... Good luck in controling it!Grandma Kathy http://picknupcones.com |

They have hardely any smell to them. They are in the mint family though, which again is leaning me toward that purple deadnettle. They have a square stem like any other mint. I was thinking it could have been Red Shiso, which I did plant last year, but it never germinated for me. Shiso should also have a cumin/cinnamon type smell to it, and as said, this stuff has virtually no scent to it. EDIT: Just looked up Red Shiso again and it looks nothing like this stuff, so I am going back to purple deadnettle again. Also, I found one in my front yard today! I pulled that #@!$ out of the ground as soon as I saw it, lol. If it starts taking over my front lawn ill get very annoyed, lol. |

I think it's purple deadnettle too. I've got it everywhere and am always pulling it out of the garden and flower beds. |
