Hello, Can anyone help me out ?? I live in central Iowa and have 4 hybrid tea roses that are in the middle of my yard. I winterized them by mounding up dirt and putting chicken wire with straw around them. However, I did not put the wire up until about January or so. My question is, I took away the wire and dirt and the canes still look pretty black. There is not much green anywhere on them. If I really look at them, I can find a small spot on all four but not much. I just wondered if I have killed them off this winter or if they are just a little behind. I have 11 more that are up on the south side of my house and they have little new shoots already coming out. Just wondering if anyone else can relate.
Thanks,
gouldbrit

Were the canes black last year before you winterized them? If not, I am thinking that part of the cane may be dead. Is it just black coloured, or does it look dead?

Don't yank any roses yet....Every year I think the winter killed a rose plant or two, (this year it really looks like it might have!), but so far they have always come back. Some are just slower and show growth later than others. After 5 years here, I am still trying to figure out how some rose bushes I have seen in Iowa get so big! Mine don't have time to grow very big before winter sets in again. Good luck with yours!

I may have lucked out !! I looked closer at them today and 3 out of the 4 are definitely alive and the last one has a little bud (or what I think is a pink bud) starting....we'll see what happens !
