I wish I had researched trees in the fall as I know that's the best time to plant. I'm looking for a small tree for my backyard, and I think a Japanese maple may be the best choice. Would you recommend that I wait till the fall to purchase one? What about buying it now and keeping it in a pot all summer? I believe they make good container trees too. |

We just planted a small (8" container) Magnolia already in full bloom, and it has taken off like there is no tomorrow, so I don't think it seems to mind. |

As Ron said, if pot grown you can pplant about anytime, just remember water needs in hot dry weather. Most standard Japanese maples will grow into small multi-stem trees to 15 or 20 feet. There are very many varieties with various characteristics of growth habit ( some weep), leaf shape, leaf coloration, mature size etc. Look around a while at various cultivars before deciding on one. |

There are 2 types of Japanese Maple's, a Dawn and a none dawf. The none dwarf can grew to 30 feet high. So make sure you are getting the dwarf. They are very expensive going for about $130.00 for a nice one , but boy are they worth it as they are so beautiful . Read up on them as I think they need a fair amount of care the first year. swindyi |

This weekend the Hardy Plant Society is having their spring sale. I noticed a grower of Japanese maples will be there, so I hope to find one that meets my needs (under 15 feet and able to tolerate some afternoon sun). |

If yours will be getting afternoon sun I would suggest one of the dwarf green leaf types, as the red leaved ones like part to full shade. They will tolerate morning or late afternoon sun, but will scorch in hot mid afternoon sun. Good luck, I love Japanese maples!! |

Whew! Conflicting opinions abound about Japanese maples! We bought a 'Beni Maiko' this weekend. The tag and the grower says it reaches 10 feet, but many of the websites I researched it on said it grows only 6 feet. At this point I'm not sure what we'll end up with! The grower said that the red-leafed maples do well in sun. Actually there are quite a few that do! Here's our maple. The new spring growth is fiery red, which changes to green with red veins in summer, then back to red in fall. |

Does your Hardy Plant Society or other plant associations have plant sales? We bought this directly from the grower for $30 at the Hardy Plant Society Spring Sale. |
