I want to try growing herbs for cooking this year. Which kinds should I try? Do they need sun or shade? |

[COLOR="Green"]Welcome to GG bananas :banana-wa Growing yer own herbs to cook is wonderful. What kind of cooking do you do? Let's see there is Parsley, sage, rosemary an' Thyme. I like Greek Oregano, Italian Parsley, Chives and Garlic chives, Savory an' Summer savory, Basil, Cilantro, and on and on. Seriously those are most of them. I probably left out something, but someone will catch it. What zone are ye in and Are ye doing containers or streight into a herb garden? Let us know and we'll help ye all we can. Good Luck!! I want to do basil, oregano, dill and thyme for sure. Maybe Parsley. That is what I use alllllllllll the time LOL. |

Greek oregano is cooking oregano. That's where ya get the good flavors. The others I think are mostly used for pretty ground cover. Buy greek. More when my kid isn't on the phone! *L |

My girls and I planted some neat pots recently, we put basil, parsely, cilantro, sage, and chives in each one and they are off the chain right now. When I am cooking my girls like to snip a little to help. It is so cool and my kids are getting a green thumb as well...lol |

Sorry, kids.... but I am here now. You totally want to grow flat leaf parsley if you are trying to make italian flavors. That's where the crisp fresh flavor of it comes from. And you can put it in everything. I grow my own sauce and my must haves are what you listed. Greek oregano, basil (I grow several types), parsely and dill. But I grow fernleaf dill because I like dill weed not seed. Hope that helps some. |

I have found curly leaf parsley, sweet basil, summer savory, chives and thyme seeds at the hardware store here in the spring but they never get any other kind of herb seeds in! I have started these ones in pots in the house. Everything but the parsley has come up but some of the little seedlings are fuzzy asif moldy and some come up so far and just flop and die. It's like the stems rot at the base. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.I would also love to find some mint seeds from someone if possible. LOL you are probably wondering:why to let them die too? LOL |
