The second one looks very similar to a crawler I had in my front bed last year. Ripped it out, a lot of hard work. Very deep rooted, very strong. Sorry, no name.

Thanks Spider_Lily. Someone suggested it may be some sort of Lavatera. After poking around a bit, I've learnt that they are both part of the same family of Malvaceae.. so I think we're on the right track here...

Sweatpea, looks like I may be doing some hard work removing it.. I was afraid of that!

First is certainly in the Malvaceae family, just haven't had time to look for exact ID.

Second is a strand of Persicaria, possibly a more sought-after variety like 'Painter's Palette'. But whether wild or more hybridized, Persicaria are all aggressive so take care where you allow them to grow.

Thanks wwgreen. I wonder if it's a Persicaria Capitata. They're on the environmental weed list here...

We have that second one here in South Africa. It has cute pompom pink flowers. It is a weed though and it comes up everywhere you don't want it. Makes a really nice ground cover for those bare patches till you have somehting to replace it with.
