I have a group of very large trees near the rd and my drive way. When I 1st moved here I put manuree in the spot for a few yrs. to build it up. The area was concave.. After all composted well. I started to plant all kinds of shade plants.. The hosts didn't do well. I was shocked.. I moved them, I have since let it go because to many gardens to keep up with and weed out.. I have been moving things a bit at a time.. Why did the hosta not do well ?? What can I plant now in that area ?? Should I try the hosta again ?? Maybe ferns ?? |

Davlyn, what kind of trees do you have? some types make the soil acidic and some make soil downright toxic...i think. Treeman or Ron would probably be a big help here.

Well Hubby and I are have a differance of opinion on that.. The trees are black ash / black oat.. I think it's ash.. some of the branches have thorns on them, they have a very nice white flower in the spring -late spring / early summer. My son in law cuts / trims trees as a business. I think he told us ash.. Sorry it's that thing called "CRS" . LOL....... |

Ah, Ah Ah... Locust... That's it Ron.... I have let the soil set and it has been yrs. since I put any more manure on it. I have had several plants do well there. Tulips, lily of the valley, Iris even..bleeding heart.. But, man the weeds just take over everything so fast.. Those plants seem to be dying back slowly.. U think the natural fern will do better ??? Hubby went in last yr. Arhhhhh!!!! and weed wacked everything down...He has no clue...He thinks I am great!! LMAO... LOL.... .. I know there is not much care free. But I wanted to create a natural setting and not worry about the weeds.. I had that for a spell. But nature is beating me. With the natural fern & hosta, U think it would work...??

That's a great idea.. Even with some ground cover the weeds/ grass would come thru the low ground cover flowers I had put in.. Had to keep giving them a hair cut ( LOL ).... I Like that idea of the meadow mix very much. I'll clean out the area real well and do that. I still have a lot of lilt of the valley there. I had a lot of columbine, but some thing kept eating it. The only flower that I had eaten ever. I am lucky The deer don't bother anything. Thanks

I would sprinkle the shade variety of wildflower mix. I've done this under a tree and they took off like crazy. |

Oh, great, thanks... It's a nice spot, right at the rd side, hat to waste the space.. I had a chair there for awhile. I put rocks around it. I hauled 'em 1 by 1... I made a rock sculpture, well that's not what it was, but sounds good, looked kewl... Now it's gone to heck... If I could retire, I'd have the time to work all the gardens I closed.. |
