I started some carrot seeds and the seedlings are now about an inch high. How tall should they be when I thin? Can I replant some in other pots? These are baby carrots and intended for use in container gardens.

Thanks,

I thin mine when the tops are three inches tall, thin to an inch apart....For me this is rough to do as I feel like I am killing the little things...LOL...but over crowed carrots are not happy carrots...then again 10 to 14 days later to four inches apart ....which I now will eat the tiny ones...then I will mound dirt over the tops of those left so I don't get bitter carrots ...and make sure to water after ever thinning...

1. answering Davlyn,
I got them in a "hundred yen store" which is kind of like your dollar stores. They were in a kit with one tiny packet of seeds, a spaghnum moss pot, and a little dirt. Now that I know more, I think I'll buy the seeds by themselves next year. I don't think that will help you much, but I'm sure somebody where you live sells baby carrot seeds-- anybody here know?

2. Vegemm, Thanks, I would never have thought of any of that! This is so much fun, learning new things!!!

That's good info... Thanks.. I grew my carrots for the horses. Don't think I ever picked them to eat. Kora would come and help Grammy and she would pick'em & eat 'em. had to tell her they need to be washed first.. She wiped 'em on her shirt... She was 4 then... LOL....

I'll look for baby carrots seeds. Is your pot long ? deep ??

they need to be washed first.....I am with your granddaughter Davlyn...I just brush them off...LOL...my daughter use to do the same ...but last year my grandson and I would graze in the morning for breakfast on the carrots and cucks...We would pull and brush off and munch...Well ..my daughters mouth just dropped...LOL...she got over it fast...Now I am organic so I know there are no chems...

cantate ...you are very welcome ...I just think it is great how we can ask something about gardening here on GG and everyone jumps in and helps...I have learned so much in the years I have been on here...

I plant a 24 inch wide row of carrots each year that is about 20 feet long... That's a bunch of thinning... What I've found that works just great is to mix radish seeds in with the carrot seeds... Then, I put them in a seasoning bottle.. You know, like McCormick seasonings... The kind that has the plastic snap on cap with rather large holes... I shake the carrot/radish seed mixture onto my wide row and then use a garden rake to pull soil over the seeds from the sides of the row and tamp very lightly... The radish seeds come up well before the carrots, and once they are any size at all, are very easy to pull... Much more so than the tiny carrot seedlings... I leave some radishes to grow to full size and use them in salads, but the main purpose is to thin the carrot seeds as I plant... Using very dry sand or vermiculite also serves the same purpose, spreading out your carrot seeds as you plant, and has the added advantage of not having to "thin" the radishes, although I like the radish method best... Hope this helps... I have arthritis, and it really helps me...

Carrots seeds are so light and tiny, like grass seed, that it's nearly impossible to sow them an inch or two apart like other seeds that are big enough to handle... You need to pull some (thin them out) or the carrots won't grow properly... Using a filler like radish seeds, sand, or vermiculite just makes the carrot seeds land farther apart and helps reduce the task of thinning them out... :animorang
