What less common plants are must-haves in your garden? I have a small garden and I have the usuals--daylilies, rudbeckia, etc.--but what plants are you just wild about that beginning gardeners might overlook? I'm ready to make a spring shopping list!

great thread, Sweetle! i love peacock orchids. they're a tender bulb and bloom in the Fall here in zone 5. i love them because they're tall, have a long bloom time and look great in the Fall garden. also the bulbs are inexpensive...about $6.95 US for 25.

Checkered Lily! (Fritillaria meleagris) For those who didn't see them in the mystery plant contest:

I have these in my garden and highly recommend them. They're very pretty and very hardy, to zone 3. The plants are long-lived and spread quickly. They also do well in rock and woodland gardens in filtered shade, or planted under shrubs. They have nodding, bell-shaped flowers which have delicate, checkered patterns usually in various shades of purple, but also in white. Even the white form has a faint check pattern like a watermark. The flowers are nearly 2 inches long and bloom for about 3 weeks. Not to be confused with the smelly Fritillaria imperialis (Crown Imperial).

And here in the northeast, I want lots of spring plants. I'm so tired of the winter by then, the more flowers in the spring the better!

I agree Foz! These are great in the garden and they are quite easy to grow. Just have to lift them every year.

It's nothing super-fancy or unusual.....but I do love my PeeGee Hydrangea, that has been pruned into a little tree.
