Hello there! I am new to this site, and am very impressed with what I'm seeing thus far. I live in South Central Wisconsin and have a 3' garden around half of the house, most on the south and east sides, but there's about 10' of it that's on the north side, only gets sun in the afternoon. Does anyone have suggestions for an edible to try back there? Thanks in advance, Margaret.

Hi, I don't know if this is good but I have a large amount of shaded area in my little yard, so have been researching plants that grow in the shade. In one book I read that turnips do well in the shade. In another I read that lettuce and some other leafy veggies will do all right without too much sun but root plants like carrots need a lot of sun. I intend to try some turnips this year; I'm thinking of doing things in containers as I could move them into the sun for a while each day, as well. I'll watch this thread with interest, since I need to know this too! Cantate7 in Tokyo |

mbvirtue, i grow sugar snap peas behind my storage shed in a small raised bed. they only get full sun about half the day but do very well. they'd probably do better in full sun but i'm not complaining. |

i have a section of veggie garden that only gets 4-6 hours of direct sun and i have another section that get no direct sun at all and what works best for me in these areas is brockoly, snap peas, kale, lectuce, collards and brussel sprouts. pole green beans did ok and strawberrys. |

I'd heard that lettuce prefer shade... so I planted a dozen on the left side of my bed... the 2 that are permanently in the shade have hardly grown at all and the others are at least 4 times bigger. When I harvest these I'll try some other shade lover and see if it works.... maybe english peas. Or put climbers like cukes and squash there, that can wander off a foot or two to the sunlight. |
